Protect Your Dog’s Health with a Kennel Cough Vaccination

All pets visiting Beverly’s Precious Pet Campus must have current, verifiable immunization records for Rabies Vaccination, Annual Booster (DHLPP) and Kennel  Cough (Bordetella or Intra Trac.)

According to Wikipedia, “Kennel cough is a highly contagious canine illness characterized by inflammation of the upper respiratory system.

  • Kennel cough can be caused by viral infections such as canine distemper, canine adenovirus, canine parainfluenza virus, or bacterial infections.
  • It is so named because the infection can spread quickly among dogs, such as in the close quarters of a kennel.

Beverly’s Pet Campus requires that all dogs boarding with them must have a Bordetella vaccination done within six months of their stay. An intranasal vaccination (meaning to squirt some up each nostril) is commonly used to protect against Bordetella, but your veterinarian may prefer the injectable vaccine.

Pet owners planning to board their dog at Beverly’s (or any kennel, for that matter) should have the intranasal dose given to their dog at least one week prior to boarding or exposure to Canine Cough situations (exposure to other dogs). This is because an intranasal spray vaccine is live, which means that the dog is getting a very small amount of the actual virus.

  1. Recent numbers show that 63% of US households own a pet – that’s 71.1 million homes and families with dogs, cats, iguanas, parakeets, fish, ferrets, potbellied pigs, etc, etc., Taking care of a pet is tougher than taking care of an infant, since our pets can’t speak. Hence, making sure your pet is safe and happy when you leave it alone at home should be a priority for all pet owners. One of the simplest ways of watching over a pet remotely is by using some sort of webcam software like GotoCamera that is easily available online these days. Thanks to technology and some very smart people who are working on making things easier for us, you can now use your basic webcam to monitor your pets while you’re away from them.
